Is hereby given that the undersigned parties have on this the 15th day of May A.D. 1874, taken up eight claims of one thousand feet square each on this asphaltum, Bitumen, naptha, or petroleim lead, herein called the "East Canon Lead," and that they claim all asphaltum, bitumen, naptha, and petroleum leads, springs, and deposits within the limits of said claims and all the lands for mining purposes therein contained and that they intend to work them according to the laws of the San Fernando Petroleum Mining District. Said claims are situated on the northern slope of the San Fernando Range of mountains.
Commencing at the south east corner of the "Rice Oil Claim", from thence east four thousand feet to a point, thence north two thousand feet to a point, thence west four thousand feet to a point, thence to the place of beginning.
This land was taken up by a company called the East Canon Company in 1865, this claim having been forfeited by said East Canon Company and subjected to location.
The undersigned also claim under the United States laws governing mines and mining.

Mining Recorder's Office, San Fernando Petroleum Mining District, May 15th, 1874
Whereas the above named parties did on the 15th day of May A.D. 1874, make application to me, the undersigned Recorder of the aforesaid district to be placed in possession of the mining property described in the foregoing notice. And I having proceeded to the above described premises, and finding the same vacant and subject to location and not upon private property, did place the said parties on the 15th day of May A.D. 1874, in quiet and peaceable possession of said premises.
