Elsmere Canyon, July, 2004, "Foothill Fire" Damage
The "Foothill Fire" lasted from July 17 to 21 of 2004. It burned over 6000 acres including virtually all of Elsmere Canyon. The fire jumped over many of the trees in the bottom of the canyon closer to the mouth sparing them. It was apparently started when a Red Tailed Hawk was electrocuted by a powerline in the foothills northeast of the intersection of the 5 and 14 freeways, burst into flames, and fell to the ground.
